Hulme Community Lunch
Hulme residents facing many issues like mental health, poverty, elderly people, disabilities, families with small children on Universal credit and all the issues that bring. Hulme planed a summer festival to help bring all the community together and provide a very relaxed fun day. We decided that we wanted to give something back to my community and having discussed some ideas with the local community realised that food brings people together and the Hulme Community Lunch became our first ever project. It was funded by Manchester City council and One Manchester. It became part of Hulme summer festival. It was designed to connect the whole community in one place. I involved members of the community from the beginning of this project to plan what would they like this event to be. They choose a food-related project and they helped to choose the menu. We had 5 total meetings and developed action plans for each activity. Our intention was to include every race and age and gender in this summer celebration to boost community spirit once again. we arranged all traditional and ethnic Halal food and vegetarian options as well as some fun activities for children like face painting, Hannah, karaoke machine, bubble machine and smoothy bikes. The project was not only about food, but it was also a project designed to build confidence and improve mental wellbeing. After planning and funding, just to make it extra special for everyone, I set up an art project to design invitations and decorations with me for this event. We made crepe paper flowers with the help of a group of children of all ages. It was a festive feeling to see community involvement in flower making to painting centrepieces for the tables. It also created lots of excitement among children. The whole event was a mixture of art , colours and community spirit.
